WORKING HOLIDAY

After a ankle injury earlier the year and a very demanding work schedule the urge to go get some good waves was growing inside me and if I did not attend to this urge I was going to explode. The type of waves your local break simply cannot provide, I’m talking about the type of waves that inspire the true stoke in surfing. I recently got a new vehicle and decided it was the perfect opportunity to test it out on a road trip up the coast. I justified leaving work for a couple of days with the idea of doing some research and testing and...

A.J. Shortboard Quiver

Meet Adin Jeenes,  probably one of the hardest charging surfers and the nicest human beings  always smiling, always stoked. He also happens to be a pretty good surfer and arguably the best backside tube rider at J-bay. We recently did a short board quiver for small to medium waves and its a great example of  how surfers should order their boards to match the type of waves you intend to ride with them. 5’5″ x 19″ x 2 1/16″ Squash tail PIG –  This board is for when its in...

Robbie’s Yellowtail

I am stoked to be working on some boards with a good friend of mine and a surfer I have much respect for. Robbie Schofield is a realy good surfer with a silky smooth style and  loves hunting big barrels. He has spent some time on the American pro circuit and also lived in Hawaii where he developed a taste for powerfull waves. He now spends his time flying commercial planes for South African airways and bouncing around the country looking for waves. As a regular surfing buddy our relationship has developed into me making him a new team rider...

Art Collaboration

I recently had the privilege of doing a creative collaboration with Rudi de Wet. He is a full-time artist who specialises in illustration, hand lettered typography, art and design. His work is characterized by bold and energetic executions. He produces work for all media and environments, for local and international clients from concept to craft. He is currently working from the beautiful city of Cape Town. I shaped  him a 5’6 Junkie Spoon and a 5’8 Caviar models, he then picked up the blanks and painted on the foam!  All the...

West Side Grom

The West Coast Boardriders is a surf club situated on the West Coast of  South Africa with the intention to develop surfing through various surfing and social events. The events and surfing series is very professional and the level of surfing is very high. The 2012 under 12 series winner Julian Zens from Melkbostrand won a custom Dutchie surfboard sponsored by Redbull (thanks Ryan), and received it today. After a couple of poska pen stripes of color and some surf movies the grom left super stoked with his new 5’3 performance short...

The Warskate

This was a recent cool project involving taking a old used skateboard, a 2010 FLIP in this case, and cutting and foiling wooden keel fins out of the wood. I really like the idea of using the discarded old skateboard deck and up-cycling something very creative out of this. The Board Model choice was affected due to the existing concave in the skatedeck that creates a natural splay angle into the fin. There is outward curve in the tip while still having the traditional upright base of a keel fin....

The Icebreaker

This is the story of the Icebreaker, a fun project I was involved with Sacha “Spex” Specker, current Bodyboard world champ, photographer, water man and all round good guy. I was having a busy day when he popped in for a visit looking for off cut foam to make some hand planes  and also suggested that I should make him a board. Scratching around on the roof looking for some old blanks we came across a discarded 6’7″ Surfblank that had about a foot of the nose broken of during transport. We decided then and there to shape...
